The Myth, the Mites and the Munge
A suggested remedy from Mike Safley for those troublesome alpaca skin problems.
I remember slowly bending over and grasping the front leg of a 6 month old white alpaca: It was 1994 and I was trimming toenails. An immediate feeling of panic leapt into mychest as I discovered a bloody puss between her toes: could this be foot and mouth disease, I naively wondered? I immediately called my vet, Dr Jerilynn Booher, and we pondered the problem. The female in question also had infected ears, hair loss, and small, puss-infused pimples on her nose. (It was not foot and mouth disease.).......(Read More.)

Camelid Skin Mix aka “Witches Brew” - Made to Dr. Norm Evans' formula which also includes Clotrimazole as an anti-fungal.
Our camelid skin mix is an emulsified product created exclusively for LLE! Emulsions are a way of making unblendable liquids into a continuous dispersible form. Some examples of emulsions are milk and cream, mayonnaise & hand lotions. An example of an UNSTABLE emulsion is homemade oil and vinegar salad dressings. Emulsions permit ease in evenly distributing medications over effected areas therefore giving even and effective treatment.
NEW: Now available in an ointment base for those hard to apply areas such as inside of legs.

Also we now carry Original M-T-G!Original M-T-G has been providing quick and effective relief from numerous skin ailments since 1938 and is recommended by veterinarians and equine enthusiasts worldwide. MTG has proven success in promoting hair regrowth on alpacas as well.
Camelid Skin Mix and MTG are a great one two punch! Camelid Skin Mix treats many skin issues first and MTG is great at fostering hair growth. |
There are two stages to dealing with skin issues: treatment and hair regrowth
Treatment for skin issues:
We used injectible Cydectin to treat skin parasites
Treats certain skin parasites (not all)
This is good for a shotgun approach if there are many areas that are affected
We also use Camelid Skin Mix made to Evan's specs
Works great when there are smaller target area
Uses a shotgun approach of meds:
Ivermectin - treats many but not all skin parasites
Gentimycin - antibiotic to treat potential secondary infection
Clotrimazole - antifungal to treat what is sometime an opportunistic, secondary infection
DMSO - carries all ingredients into the skin
Mineral oil - base, softens the skin to support hair regrowth areas
Dr Pollard's herbal immune support
Supports the alpacas own immune system to help improve internal resistance to parasites
Hair regrowth:
The best product I have found by far is MTG.
I have used NuStock but have found the MTG is significantly better at growing hair.
Don’t know why but it works! |
Camelid Skin Mix Tips for use
- Shelf life: 1 year when stored at room temperature.
- Wear gloves when using any DMSO based product
- Clean the skin area to be treated because DMSO pulls anything with it and could potentially carry dirt or other chemicals like fly spray
- Apply to affected area with a brush, pouring on, dauber top can, etc
- Follow Dr Evan’s Field Manual for application schedule
- This product isn’t a cure all but is a tool that works in many cases but will not treat all skin conditions. Consult your vet.
- Directions(Per Dr Evans' Manual):
Shake well and apply every 48 hours for 5 applications. This mix should be safe in
pregnant as well as non-pregnant alpacas. I apply it with a dauber or with latex gloves.
For more challenging cases: apply every 48 hours for 4 times-skip 7 days and then reapply again in the same manner.
