Q: The pendulum is reversible, one side for cutters and one for combs. What is the procedure to reverse that without changing any preset settings? A: First let's assemble the pendulum. The adjustable rod should screw into the handle assembly so the two knurled black knobs are on the bottom. Tighten into handle and screw on lock nut. Tighten securely. You will notice inscription by the handle that says "comb side" on the top; and upon turning it over, "cutter side" on the bottom. While this may lead you to think it necessary to rotate the unit to grind combs and cutters, the inscriptions refer to positioning of the pins which hold the blades to the magnetic pressure bar. Turning the two black knurled knobs one way will make the pins move up in their slots towards (closer) to the pressure bar hence towards the "comb side". This is the position of the pins for grinding combs. Turning the two black knurled knobs the other way will move the pins down in their slots further from the magnetic pressure bar hence towards the "cutter side" of the handle. This is the position for grinding the cutters. Q: I believe both discs are beveled the same way so either can be used on combs or cutters. They are not marked. Was hoping somebody could either confirm that or correct me. A: The two discs are machined the same, so they are interchangeable. The clamp plate is machined so the bevel is opposite that of the discs. It may be assembled with either side against a disc. Q: The clamp plate is not marked. Is there any difference in the sides? With the clamp plate there are 2 washers. Is that 1 between clamp plate and disc or 2 or none? A: When applying the glue and emery papers, think of it as making a sandwich. I find it helpful to put the bolt in a vise with the threads pointing up. Slide one of the washers on the bolt, then a disc so the machined side is up. Apply a thin coating of glue, then one of the emeries. Next put the clamp plate on, then the second emery with the grit side toward the clamp plate. Apply glue to the second disc, and slide it on the bolt. Finally the second washer and tighten with the nut. The washers end up on the outside of the discs. Allow 3-4 hours (longer in humid or wet weather) for the glue to dry before use. When dry unbolt the discs and attach them to the grinder. There is on right hand thread and one left hand thread. Tighten securely. Q: Is it 40 grit for cutters and 80 grit for combs? A: The coarser (40) grit is used to sharpen the combs. The fine (80) grit is for the cutters. I find I can grind about 20-25 combs with one emery, but you really need to judge by the sparks. Make a visual note of the amount of sparks when grinding the first few combs. When you get to the point you've got about half as much, the emery can be freshened up by touching a clean wire brush to the paper. Be careful, you can get your knuckles easily. Q: Theres is a gauge included to set up pendulum correctly with disc. How do I do so? A: To adjust pendulum height, attatch the gauge to pins on the pendulum. the line on the gauge should run through the center of the arbor shaft when pendulum hangs straight down. If no gauge is available, draw a line on one of the discs from center to edge with a pencil or chalk. Spin the disc so that the line is parallel to the ground (perpendicular to hanging pendulum). Adjust pendulum height so the pins are on the line. |
